Stellantis, a global leader in automotive innovation, has announced its adoption of the upcoming SAE J3400 charging connector for select battery-electric vehicle (BEV) models set to launch in North America starting in 2026. This strategic move reflects Stellantis' commitment to open standards and seamless charging experiences for its customers.
Ricardo Stamatti, Stellantis Senior Vice President of Global Energy & Charging, emphasized the importance of industry alignment on open standards, stating, "Customers win when the industry aligns on open standards. We are happy to announce our backing and adoption of the SAE J3400 connector, a milestone for all customers on the path to open and seamless charging." This decision underscores Stellantis' dedication to customer-centric innovation and its vision for open interoperability and mobility freedom outlined in the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan.
Stellantis' adoption of the SAE J3400 connector is part of a broader initiative to expand EV charging infrastructure in North America. In order to accomplish this, the company has joined up with six other leading automakers to help establish the IONNA charging network, with an aim to install over 30,000 high-powered charge points in urban and highway locations by 2030. These charging stations will support both Combined Charging System (CCS) and J3400 connectors, ensuring accessibility for all BEV customers.
The IONNA charging network will prioritize customer experience, offering reliability, high-powered charging capability, digital integration, and appealing locations with various amenities. By focusing on renewable energy sources, Stellantis aims to provide sustainable charging solutions that align with its Dare Forward 2030 goals, including becoming a carbon net-zero corporation by 2038.
As the automotive industry transitions towards electrification, Stellantis remains at the forefront of innovation, driving towards a future of sustainable mobility and seamless charging experiences. With the adoption of the SAE J3400 connector and the expansion of the IONNA charging network, Stellantis is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of EV infrastructure in North America. As brands like Chrysler and Ram electrify their vehicle stock, these interventions will become crucial in transition to a gasoline-free world and maintaining convenience for motorists.
