Stellantis, a global automotive leader, is set to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) charging with its groundbreaking partnership with Ample, a company specializing in Modular Battery Swapping Technology. The collaboration aims to integrate Ample's innovative solution into Stellantis electric vehicles, offering customers a fully charged battery in less than five minutes. This move addresses key challenges faced by EV users, including charging time, range anxiety, and battery wear.
The partnership is marked by a binding agreement, with the initial program scheduled to launch in Madrid, Spain, in 2024. This program will feature a fleet of 100 Fiat 500e electric vehicles within Stellantis' Free2move car sharing service, showcasing the potential of Ample's technology in a real-world setting.
Ricardo Stamatti, Stellantis Senior Vice President of the Charging & Energy Business Unit, emphasized the company's commitment to exploring diverse mobility solutions. He highlighted how Ample's Modular Battery Swapping solution aligns with Stellantis' goals of enhancing energy efficiency, performance, and reducing range anxiety for customers. The Fiat 500e, a popular EV within Stellantis, will be a key player in this pioneering program.
Ample's technology offers a unique approach to delivering energy to EVs, making the refueling experience as fast and convenient as traditional gas refueling. The modular nature of Ample's batteries allows them to be seamlessly integrated into any electric vehicle without the need for extensive reengineering of vehicle platforms.
Furthermore, Ample's lightweight battery swapping stations can be rapidly deployed in public areas, providing a scalable infrastructure to meet the growing demand for EV charging. The process is streamlined, with an Ample-enabled EV recognized by the station upon approach. The driver can initiate a battery swap from a mobile app, resulting in a fully charged battery in less than five minutes.
Ample's subscription service model for its battery technology offers a cost-effective solution for EV owners, reducing upfront vehicle costs while ensuring access to the latest battery technology. This approach enhances the EV's range and lifespan, making electric vehicles more accessible to a broader audience.
As part of its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, Stellantis aims for a 100% passenger car battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales mix in Europe and a 50% mix in the United States by 2030. This aligns with the company's commitment to becoming a carbon net-zero corporation by 2038. The partnership with Ample represents a significant step towards achieving these ambitious goals, reinforcing Stellantis' position as an industry leader in electric mobility.
