Last month, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ranked the new 2022 Jeep Compass to be a Top Safety Pick. In all six of its crashworthiness tests, the IIHS rated the 2022 Jeep Compass its highest possible rating through every test.
The IIHS conducts three different frontal crash tests. First, a moderate overlap test simulates a head-to head collision between two similarly sized cars that are offset, once on the driver side and once on the passenger's side. Next, the driver-side small overlap frontal test simulates a small object, like a utility pole, striking on the driver's side of the vehicle. A similar test, the passenger side small overlap frontal test simulates a collision with an obstacle on the passenger's side. Additionally, the IIHS conducts side crash tests, where a 3,000 pound barrier, simulating an SUV, collides with the car on either side to test how well it protects passengers using the smaller crumple zones on the sides.
The roof strength test simulates the pressure of a rollover on a car. In this test, an angled metal plate presses down on the roof, gradually increasing pressure so researchers can measure the amount of pressure needed to cave in the roof. The last of the crashworthiness tests is the head restraint and seat test. These tests measure the amount of force on the neck of the occupant during a crash and how well the head rest mitigates the risk of whiplash in a crash.
In all of these tests, the Jeep Compass was given a Good rating, the highest available. For example, the roof was able to withstand 4.94 times the car's weight before compressing 5 inches. The standard to reach a Good rating in the rollover simulation is 4 times the vehicle's weight for a 5 inch compression, meaning that the Jeep Compass far surpasses the safety standards set. Overall, the Compass is an exceptionally safe car and one that you can feel comfortable driving in knowing that you and your family are safe and sound.
