Last month, Stellantis revealed its all-new Hurricane engine that is sure to disrupt the norms. Bringing drivers more of everything they want while cutting what they don’t, the Hurricane engine uses state-of-the-art technology to deliver exciting and unmatched results.

The 3.0-liter, twin-turbo, inline, six-cylinder engine is designed to deliver better fuel economy and fewer emissions than larger engines. Simultaneously, the Hurricane is able to generate more horsepower and torque than competing naturally aspirated V-8 and boosted six-cylinder power plants. Essentially, the six-cylinder engine beats the horsepower and torque levels of many V-8 and boosted six-cylinder engines. 

All of this is without sacrificing fuel economy too. With two low-inertia turbochargers that power the Hurricane’s rapid response to throttle inputs and enhanced torque output, the Hurricane engine is ready to get the job done more efficiently than you have ever seen before.

The Hurricane twin-turbo engine’s arrival is encompassed in Stellantis’ larger plan of moving towards a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and to be Carbon Net Zero by 2038. The Hurricane twin-turbo I-6 is designed with the future in mind; specifically, it is uniquely designed for potential integration with electrification for low-emission vehicles (LEVs).

“The Hurricane twin-turbo is a no-compromise engine that delivers better fuel economy and an important reduction in greenhouse gases without asking our customers to give up performance,” says Micky Bly, Stellantis head of propulsion systems. 

Stellantis propulsion systems engineers have designed an inherently smooth-running I-6 configuration. With the Hurricane engine’s robust base architecture, engineers have been able to create two distinct variants. The first being Standard Output (SO), which is optimized for fuel economy by using the cooled exhaust gas circulation (EGR) while delivering enhanced power and torque. The Standard Output variant produces over 400 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque. The second variant is the High Output (HO) option, which is optimized with great performance in mind while maintaining significant fuel economy during hard jobs such as towing. The High Output variant offers over 500 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque.

V-8 rivals cannot compete with the Hurricane twin-turbo. It is 15% more efficient than larger engines, reduces carbon footprint immensely, and maintains the strength and power needed to get through tougher jobs.
