April showers brig May flowers, and also the one year anniversary of Amber Weber with O’Daniel Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Although this was her first year with the O’Daniel’s, Amber has eight years of experience as a car saleswoman. We caught up with her to check in on her first year in review.
A service rep for CDJR, Amber originally had a few misconceptions about the position. Before switching over from sales, Amber used to think the people in the back didn’t really do anything, just sit around. When she began working in service herself, she realized how wrong that notion was. “It’s actually quite fast-paced, and unpredictable. Things are always moving forward, and changing.” The hours are more predictable and regular than sales, however, and Amber wanted to spend time with her seven grandsons (two grand-dogs and three grand-kittens, too!) on the weekends.
Working with people all day, Amber serves as a conduit between the technicians and the customers. The change and variety are why Amber likes working in the auto industry: “It’s challenging and new every day. You have to be ready for everything, at any time. All the people are also fun to interact with, you never know what they’re going to say!”
She recalled one customer, an elderly woman who was a regular for awhile, as her old vehicle (about 15-20 years old) was constantly having problems. “I picked her up to get a rental car, and she told me all about her life. How she was 86, and never had children, and still worked at Walmart three days a week.” Another time, Amber came back to work after lunch and found a whole bouquet of balloons waiting for her from a happy customer.
Family is important to Amber, and her own mother is her role model. “She was always kind, and even growing up in Detroit, she was not prejudiced and taught us not to be either. She was so funny too, and when she laughed, no sound came out—she had a silent laugh!” We were sorry to hear about her passing this year, and offer our deepest condolences to Amber and her family.
Her own personal glimpse of wisdom into the car industry? “Be adaptive, everything is subject to change. You have to adapt, and go with the flow or be left behind.” Amber also strives to give every customer a pleasant experience and make getting their car serviced as smooth as possible. Her strongest asset? “Willingness to help others; to assist people with whatever they may need.”
In closing, Amber leaves us with her favorite song, “Make Your Own Kind Of Music” by Mama Cass Elliot:
Nobody can tell you
There's only one song worth singing
They may try and sell ya
Cause it hangs them up
To see someone like you
But you gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind of music
Even if nobody else sings along
