For decades, Ford has been a symbol of ruggedness and toughness in American motoring. More recently, Jeep has been working to prove that this label does not need to come with the side effect of poor fuel efficiency or harm to the planet. This innovation is most evident in the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. Named on Ward's AutoWorld's list of the 10 most innovative engines and propulsion systems, the model is a shining example of the brand's leadership in the plug-in hybrid space.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe can go 25 miles solely on the power of its electric motor, but in combination with the internal propulsion engine, is EPA certified for 56 miles per gallon equivalent. Just because the car has an electric motor doesn't take away its power, either; it is rated at an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Together, this means that the Jeep Cherokee can tow 6,000 pounds, perfect for camping, towing, carrying hunting and fishing gear, or any other tasks that the driver will need.
Jeep has also succeeded in their new 3.0-liter Hurricane Twin Turbo I-6. This engine is currently used in the Grand Wagoneer and is also a member of the Ward's Top 10 Engines list in its first year of eligibility. Before its release, the Grand Wagoneer had a less efficient V-8 engine installed, but the Hurricane Twin Turbo delivers more power and torque, while also producing less emissions, than the previous models' engine.
The power in the Jeep is eye-raising as well, producing 510 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Along with this 3.0 liter engine comes an eight-speed automatic gearbox and standard all wheel drive, perfect for conquering any off-road challenges that may come the way of the Grand Wagoneer. No matter what decade, Jeep has always been at the forefront of deciding the features that its customers need most to live the active life they deserve.
