Out of the many words that come to mind when someone hears the word “Charger” safety isn’t always the first. In all reality, the Dodge Charger has been a strong and consistent performer in the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s tests, but the 2017 Charger brings its blend of safety features to the forefront.

50 years after its inception the Charger has gone through many iterations and car platforms, from a modest hatchback to a luxury coupe, it landed on the sweet spot of a four-door sedan a decade ago. The 2017 Charger carries much history in its pistons, with base models using a 3.6-L V6 running at 292 horsepower engine mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission, or an optional V8 that can peak at 707 horsepower, it’s easy to see why safety is needed.

With upwards of 80 standard safety features like Stability Control and Lane Keep Assist along with Dodge’s advanced Full-Speed Forward Collision-Plus both the RWD and AWD models have earned the top score of five stars in the NHTSA’s evaluation. Going through rigorous frontal and side impact tests as well as the ever present rollover resistance assessment proved the 2017 Charger to be a great safety pick edging out competition like the Chrysler 300 in the rankings.

With all of the legacy behind it, the 2017 Charger drives securely into this year. The next time you hear the Charger in a conversation, safety will be a leading thought.
