The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited traces its roots back to the original Willys Jeep that served the U.S. Army some 75 years ago in World War II. Today the modern-day Wrangler Unlimited - along with the two-door Wrangler - remains the most rugged and off-road ready Jeep vehicle in the lineup. It's still available in either soft-top (convertible) or hard-top version, but can be decked out from the Spartan-like Sport edition to the (relatively) luxurious Sahara model. But for real rock-crawling and stream-crossing capabilities, you'll want the Rubicon version of the Wrangler Unlimited.
As mentioned earlier, there are three base trims for the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited: the base Sport, the off-roading oriented Rubicon and the more civilized Sahara. But there are a total of 13 Wrangler Unlimited trim packages in, which should satisfy nearly anyone's idea of what a classic Jeep should reflect.
The base Sport is pretty bare bones, but there's reason for that. The whole thing can actually be hosed out after a dirty day of adventuring; Jeep thoughtfully includes drainage plugs in the vehicle floor. Doors are removable and the windshield is foldable on this Jeep, and the standard 4x4 gearing ratio is 3.21.
For serious off-road adventure - and there's no-better build SUV for that than a Jeep - you'll want to go with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon edition. It starts with features like special, high-endurance tires, along with a heavy-duty Dana 44 front axle and shorter 4.10 axle gearing. It also includes a special transfer case with a lower crawl ratio, an electronically-disconnecting front sway bar, front and rear locking differentials and rock rails. You also get automatic LED headlights. Inside, you can still enjoy the standard air conditioning, and there's the convenience of a 115-volt outlet for your power tools or over electric camping gear.
If you think you're going to be more on-road than off (but still want the availability of Jeep's go-anywhere, do-anything capability, consider the Sahara version of the Wrangler Unlimited. It builds on the Sport model, and adds Power Convenience package items like air conditioning, power windows and locks, keyless entry, a security alarm and heated power mirrors, along with remote start, heated seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
